Posted on 29. Oct, 2013 by in Financial Planning

Grocery waste is something that every grocery store needs to deal with. If it is not dealt with carefully, it can cost the store unnecessarily. If careful planning is used, waste can be prevented. There are many ways that a store’s food products can be used so they don’t become waste. Recycling is also an effective way to deal with waste, and it also creates a positive image for a store’s customers.

One way that grocery stores can prevent waste is to simply watch expiration dates on their food products. If products are used in the store’s bakery that are nearing their expiration date, it can make it so they do not have to be thrown away. Salads and baked goods can be made from produce that may not look great, but is still edible. This type of produce can also be donated to a local food bank, which is a great way to give back to the community. Waste can also be prevented if employees are trained to properly trim and wash the produce.

The environment is something that concerns many people. Recycling is a great way to help the environment and to effectively deal with grocery waste. There are opportunities to recycle in each portion of a grocery store’s operation. It can happen in the pharmacy, deli, and the flower section. Recycling collection can be set up with clearly marked containers that employees and customers can use. Employees can be educated about meat waste, and taught how to collect waste in a rendering bin. Grocery stores can choose a service to repair their pallets that will take wood waste, and recycle anything the things that cannot be used again.

A grocery store’s resources can be used effectively so waste is not created. Using a little common sense can go a long way in reducing the amount of waste produced in a store. Recycling is an environmentally sound way of dealing with grocery waste. These two methods, prevention and recycling can help a grocery store to more effectively manage their resources and reduce the amount of waste that is produced.
