How to Save Money on Grocery Shopping

Posted on 19. Aug, 2013 by in Financial Planning

If you have noticed your food bill continuing to rise month after month, then it might be time to arm yourself with a few tips to save money shopping. While it is true that food prices keep rising, that does not mean that you have to go into debt just to feed your family. Here are a few essential tips that can help you save big at the grocery store:

1. Plan ahead

By knowing what you have in your pantry and fridge at home, it helps you not to overbuy. Make a detailed menu list for the week and only buy things that you need for those meals. It is also a good idea to have a light snack before entering the store, as most people overbuy when they are hungry.

2. Choose healthier food

By focusing your grocery trip on fresh items, you will actually save money shopping. By avoiding filler foods that hold no nutritional value (chips, pop, cookies) you will be able to save a lot of money as well as a lot of calories.

3. Use coupons

By hitting the stores armed with coupons and during a sale, you are sure to save a few extra dollars. The biggest rule with coupons is to ensure you were going to buy that item anyway.

4. Save on Proteins

Try to pass up expensive meats and fish as much as possible and instead focus on cheaper protein options like beans, tofu, eggs and legumes.

By preparing ahead of time, making healthier choices and using coupons, you are sure to save money shopping on your next trip to the grocery store.
